Weicker
Lowell Weicker, a former Republican Senator from Connecticut, and a former Independent Governor after losing re-election to the Senate seat to Joseph Lieberman in 1988, has now announced that he will challenge the incumbent Democrat for re-election next year. His latest issue seems to be opposition to the War in Iraq.
I’m sure Lieberman is terrified. If anything, this pretty much guarantees that the Republicans in Connecticut will vote for the Democratic Senator in roughly the same proportion that Democrats in Connecticut will vote for the incumbent Republican Governor.
Meanwhile, the good Senator has called on the President to form a “War Cabinet,” which would be a bi-partisan group. I think it’s an excellent idea – it will split the Democratic Party more than it’s split. And it will make the President look like the calm, seasoned, war President.
“It’s time for Democrats who distrust President Bush to acknowledge he’ll be commander-in-chief for three more years…We undermine the president’s credibility at our nation’s peril.”
At last – a Democrat thinking of the nation, and not himself or his party.
