Ad Hoc Politics

By Jayson ~ December 13th, 2005 @ 4:35 pm

Here are some random political musings derived from the wires:

No Arrests made in 80% of homicides

* * *

Statistics compiled by . . . police for the committee [on gang violence] show that in 74 of the 94 homicides recorded through Monday afternoon in 2005, no arrest has been made….

* * *

The 94 homicides so far for 2005 is a 10-year high.

The figures provided by the police reiterated previous reports — that homicide victims are disproportionately black and the crimes repeatedly occur at federally subsidized apartment complexes for low income residents owned and operated by [the city’s local] Housing Authority.

Outrageous, huh?

Utterly disgraceful, no?

Indeed, the entire government of the City of San Francisco should be ashamed of itself.

And if you think “librulz” San Francisco has major problems with murders, gangs, crime, blight, homelessness, etc. — and it certainly does, Chomsky — you should see how poorly their public school systems are faring.

Go figure.

Q: How Often Do You Beat Your Wife?

I always think of that old ploy whenever Bush talks to the media. The inevitable result of Bush talking to the media is this type of hit piece:

Bush says he does not live in a bubble.”

Or this one:

Bush: Race Not Factor in Katrina Reponse

Judges & Courts

A judge ruled that two conservative parishes that broke away from the Episcopal Diocese . . . to protest the ordination of a gay bishop are the rightful owners of their church buildings and other property.

* * *

Last year a unanimous state appeals court ruling granted property rights to St. Luke’s Community Church, which had quit the United Methodist Church because it didn’t discipline clergy who conducted a union service for a same-sex couple. The [state] Supreme Court turned down the [diocese’s] appeal.

Interesting case, huh?

Who would have thought there were such pro-property rights trial and appeals court judges out in

California?

Much less judges who won’t sell out a conservative church to appease its former diocese?

The Nation’s Smallest Violin

is playing for this terror-bot:

Lawyers for would-be millennium bomber Ahmed Ressam asked a federal appeals court . . . to overturn his conviction one one charge in the hopes of reducing his 22-year prison sentence.

Yeah, right, cry me a river.
He’s lucky he didn’t get 22 bullets to the skull.

On a different but related topic, it’s always interesting, is it not, to read stories about terror plots that were hatched pre-Bushitler?

Given that in many corners of the political Internet community all of recorded history seemingly began in Jan. 2001.

Free Speech

A Muslim student-employee at William Paterson University . . . has been cleared of sexual harassment charges the state institution brought against him after he expressed his religious opinion of homosexuality in a private e-mail to a female professor.

It’s sickening, is it not, that an institution of higher learning would have placed faux notions of “political correctness” above and beyond the principles of the First Amendment?

Yep.

Especially in a progressive state like New Jersey.

On a different but related topic, I trust the Ivy League grad student “free speech” activists {phfftttt} are as happy about *that* example of free speech winning out over gummint tyranny as they would have been if someone was cleared of all culpability after painting a picture of George W. Bush with a gun to his head?

Right?

Smokin’

A University of Massachusetts professor says the medical marijuana grown by the federal government isn’t very good. He wants a permit to cultivate his own pot, saying it will be better for research.

* * *

‘The government’s marijuana just isn’t strong enough,’ said Richard Doblin, a . . . . supporter [of the professor] who heads the Massachusetts-based Mutlidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies.

A hearing before a federal administrative judge at the Drug Enforcement Administration got under way Monday and is expected to last all week.

What were they talking about? I forgot.

Speaking of Drug Laws

I found this press release to be quite interesting.

Therein a coalition opposed to the legalization of medical pot and other drugs claims that two of George Soros’ political funds have spent over $50 million since 1996 to try to soften drug laws.

I have no idea whether that claim is accurate. But if it’s even close to being accurate, then isn’t it high time to start considering whether Soros is the worst political investor in history?

I mean, seriously.

He spent, what, $25 million last year to try to unseat Bush? Thirty million? More?

That went over like a Led Zeppelin.

And if anything drug laws have gotten stiffer since the mid-1990’s, not more lenient.

Then there’s that Air America absurdity.

I also heard on “The Street” that Soros got burned pretty bad shorting the U.S. Dollar last year.

Then again, on the flip side of that coin, all Soros needs is a third-party spoiler candidate or a whole bunch of conservatives staying home and not voting, in Nov. 2008, to get de facto control over much of the White House.

Scary, huh?
