Border Control

Various weekend gems that didn’t make it through the filters of the usual suspects:

More immigration agents on the way

Immigration authorities in Chicago will receive a second federal team with the mission of arresting illegal immigrants who have ignored government orders to turn themselves in for deportation…..

The current [Chicago] team arrested 743 immigrants in fiscal 2005, a 31-percent increase from 2004.

Nice.

I blame Chertoff.

From South Carolina:

The former owners of a North Charleston grocery store will be deported back to their native Jordan after funneling money there through a tax evasion scheme….

Read the whole thing.

3 Accused of Running Phony-Document Mill

Two Oxnard [California] men remained in custody late Friday after their arrest on suspicion of running a phony-document mill that produced hundreds of fake Social Security cards, driver’s licenses and green cards.

During a raid Tuesday . . . . U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and Ventura County sheriff’s deputies confiscated counterfeiting equipment and tools, including a computer, laminating machines, printers, and scanners.

Nice.

Indeed, as previously noted in this space, the Bush administration decided a long time ago they would focus their efforts at cracking the skulls of the facilitators of illegal immigration — document fiends, smugglers, “coyotes” — raTHer than wasting time and money trying to chase down every last illegal in every last kitchen in every last Denny’s across America.

They’re doing things differently from the Klingon administration. You would *think* conservatives would be happy about that.

Speaking of moving on, here’s another gem from the 5th Circuit COA:

On September 4, 2002, the [INS] initiated removal proceedings against Illorson . . . . On October 28, 2002, Illorson renewed her application for asylum, withholding of removal, and protection under the Convention Against Torture.

Those applications, of course, were denied.

The appeals court said:

“Hasta la vista, baby.”

Or words to that effect.

Barksdale – H.W. Bush.
Stewart – Saint Bill.
Clement – W. Bush.

Speaking of the federal courts, check out these items:

Buillermo Augustin Cerros-Godoy, 40, of Honduras, was sentenced by Chief Federal District Court Judge William F. Downes on Jan. 9, 2006 for illegal re-entry of a deported alien….

Continuing:

Pepe Cota-Villa, 30, of Mexico, was sentenced by Federal District Court Judge Clarence Brimmer on Jan. 6, 2006 for being an illegal alien in possession of a firearm. Cota-Villa received one year, four months imprisonment ane three years of supervised release.

There’s more:

Juan Alonso-Hijine-Rios, 37, of Mexico, was sentenced by Federal District Court Judge Alan B. Johnson on Jan. 9, 2006, for illegal re-entry of a previously deported alien . . . . Hijine-Rios received three years, five months of imprisonment and two years of supervised release.

Continuing:

Ignacio Lara-Ibanez, 29, of Mexico, was sentenced by Federal District Court Judge Clarence Brimmer on Jan. 9, 2006 for illegal re-entry of a previously deported alien . . . . Lara-Ibanez received three years, 10 months of imprisonment, a $250 fine, and three years of supervised release.

Not bad, huh?

Especially since all those sentences were handed down in one week, in a single court, in one small state:

Wyoming.

Imagine how many prosecutions and sentences along those lines are handled each week by all the federal district courts in all the other states around the nation.

What do you suppose that number is, Buchanan-Derbyshire?

Five hundred per week?

One thousand per week??

Five thousand per week???

Or perhaps even more?
