Conservatives Off to Good Start in Canada
The new Conservative government headed by Prime Minister Stephen Harper presented its Throne speech today on the occasion of the opening of the First Session of the 39th Parliament of Canada outlining their programs for Canada and showing that the Conservatives can build a consensus to govern Canada. True to conservative ideology, “This new government trusts in the Canadian people, and its goal is that Canadians will once again trust in their government. It is time for accountability.”
Key points from the speech include:
- Accountability of government personnel in response to the Liberal Sponsorship scandal.
- Maintaining Canada’s military role in Afghanistan.
- smoother relations with “our best friend” the United States.
- reduction in the GST tax.
- $1200 child tax credit.
- Open Federalism with strong respect to all provinces including Quebec.
NDP party members have been reported say that in tone and substance, the talks they’ve had so far with the Conservatives are “more professional” than they ever had with the Liberals. Does this sound familiar when it comes to US Republicans versus US Democrats?
We see the same birth of the conservative ideal in Canada that we saw with the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980 and the Contract with America in 1994. As the attacks from the liberals and Democrats ratchet up here in the US, as conservatives, let us be inspired again by the success and ideals exemplified by our friends in Canada.
