How to Avoid Impeachment

By PoliPundit ~ April 6th, 2006 @ 9:10 am

If Democrats win control of Congress this year (a still-unlikely prospect,) President Bush is almost certain to be impeached. You don’t have to take my word for it. Here’s what Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman had to say in a recent e-mail:

Either we use every tool available to fight and win the War on Terror … or we heed the calls of Democrats who would censure and impeach the President for fighting the terrorists.

There are now two types of voters: Those who would support the impeachment of the president, and those who would not.

Let’s say you’re Karl Rove. What advise should you be giving the president? Shouldn’t you be telling him to do everything he can to ensure that his supporters show up at the polls in 2006?

Instead, Rove and Bush are determined to poke their supporters in the eye.

In a recent poll of PoliPundit.com readers, 40 percent of respondents rated illegal immigration as the highest priority to tackle, ahead of tax cuts, spending cuts, and Iraq. On sites such as RightWingNews.com, where the most committed conservatives gather, the sentiment is overwhelmingly against illegal immigration.

What is the president’s response to this? To propose a giant amnesty for the 12 million illegal invaders currently in this country. And to import another 400,000 low-skilled under-educated menial laborers every year.

Any politician who supports amnesty will not get my support for any elected office.

And many other conservatives feel the same way. In a recent special election in California, fully 25 percent of the vote went to Minuteman Jim Gilchrist, even though he was running against the Republican candidate. Those numbers are telling, and Messrs. Rove and Bush would be wise to heed them.

Unless they want to see the president impeached next year.
