McCain, The Devil We Do Not Know
If the November 2008 election turns out to be McCain vs Clinton, it will be between “the devil we know” and “the devil we do not know.” In my mind, John McCain is “the devil we do not know.”
I will not cast a vote for Hillary Clinton but I can not cast a vote for John McCain.
Robert Novak is reporting:
Well-connected public figures report that they have been told recently by Rudolph Giuliani that, as of now, he intends to run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008.
I happen to be a “social conservative” that could probably support Giuliani. The issue of abortion will be decided in the Courts, by modern science and at the local leval. If we know that he supports Justices in the mold of Scalia and Thomas, I am sold on him. It would do him well if he came out and said that science has caused him to rethink abortion beyond the point of viability at @ 22 weeks. He would also be helped by stating that Roe v. Wade is simply bad law and the issue should have been left to the people. “Thinking liberals” could embrace that. Social Conservatives could accept that.
On the issue of “gun control,” the war has been won. With the now widespread “carry laws” we have victory and are not going backwards. We have shown that an armed society is a safe society.
UPDATE: Great comment from “Bill” in the threads:
I know from experience that a lot of “conservative” politicians have run on solid conservative platforms just to find out that they had to placate Moderates. Rudy would be the reverse. He would have the moderates donw pat and would have to placate the conservatives. I think we would get more out of him than Bush ‘41, Nixon or Ford.
