ATLANTA (Reuters) – Wal-Mart Stores Inc., criticized for displacing local retailers and accused of paying low wages, said on Friday it would donate $5 million to the National Urban League to fund workforce development and other programs at the black empowerment group.

That’s cool and all but when I read this I could not help but wonder if they had got a visit from the Rainbow Push or related folks suggesting such a donation would be in their best interests. More likely the mass retailer is probably just trying to buy some good will since it’s seems to be under attack constantly. By the way Andrew Young (former mayor of Atlanta) was appointed head of “Working Families for Wal-Mart”, a group who’s purpose is to stem criticism of Wal-Mart, whom this week endorsed Cynthia McKinney for re-election.
