Israel Replaces Top Commander

Israel’s military dispatched a new general to coordinate military efforts in Lebanon Tuesday, the army said. Israeli media linked the change to a possible intensification of the offensive as well as to criticism of the handling of the fight against Hezbollah.
An army statement said armed forces chief Lt. Gen. Dan Halutz on Tuesday sent his deputy, Maj. Gen. Moshe Kaplinksi, to organize the military actions. The move effectively sidelines the head of the northern command, Maj. Gen. Udi Adam.

The army statement said Halutz retained “complete confidence” in Adam, and the military would not comment further on the reasons for Kaplinski’s appointment. But Adam was clearly dispirited by the news.

Good. Frankly it’s seemed to me that over the last two weeks there has been some serious indecision going both in the military apparatus as well as in the political environment. The way it appears to me is they have been pussyfooting around the issue of a major ground campaign, while fumbling around the border area all the while taking more and more rocket fire. Don’t get me wrong it’s not like they are being defeated or anything, but they appear directionless toward their goals. It’s time for Israel to ignore the theater play at the U.N. and do what they need to do, or get off the pot; perhaps this is the beginning of something concrete.

Those of you that have wanted some more background and analysis on the “Shebaa farms” area please check out Bruce Kesler’s post yesterday at the Democracy Project.

In unrelated news a U.S. sailor reportedly *may* have spied for Israel.
