Foley, More Details Means Less Political Damage

By Oak Leaf ~ October 4th, 2006 @ 11:02 am

This morning Polipundit wrote “Foley” with the premise that the “scandal is good for the GOP,” I agree and longtime reader “Wethal” chimed in with an immediate positive benefit:

It presumably haa also knocked teh “macaca” and “N-word” stories off the news in VA, adn gotten Allen back on message.

To add to Polipundit, I would now say that more details, and the nastier the better, will actually insulate the GOP. If this was a “simple mild tawdry sex scandel” it would be possible for the opposition to paint others with the same brush. However, as more nasty details come out the thought that comes into your mind is “that was one sick man.” Emphasis placed on “one.” So how would I like to see the media run with this? I want them to run Foley 24/7 and give detail after detail, the more outlandish the better.

Longtime reader “beej” had a comment that I believe is partly correct:

I think a portion of the GOP will expect a little house cleaning or some ‘proof’ that embarrassing and harmful situations like this won’t be happening again.

Let me use Florida to comment on “beej’s” statement. Last month I wrote “Florida Governor Race, Move It To Toss Up.” I guarantee right now that many Florida voters are very worried what may come out concerning Christ either before the election or after the election if he wins. On the other hand in Florida Congressional District 16 (Foley’e District), the large republican base is going to look at Joe Negron and say he is an “average Joe” in an average house, with an average wife and average kids. Voters in FL-16 know that you can’t go wrong by voting for Joe.

So who will benefit in November? Simple, the politicians that are simple “average guy/gal” that are running for office will benefit. If you have a personal life that is different than “Jane/Joe America” or are involved in a business that has legal but difficult to splain business transactions you will lose.

The fallout is that voters will want candidates that honestly “look like themselves.”
