The Military Commissions Act, which the President signed into law Tuesday, establishes a fair and efficient system of military tribunals that will allow us to prosecute captured terrorists while ensuring these terrorists receive basic legal protections.

The legislation also allows the CIA to continue its program to question captured terrorist leaders, a program that has helped the United States gain key intelligence about planned attacks on the United States.

The bill also establishes specific guidelines for how detainees are to be treated and complies with our nation’s international obligations.

The Military Commissions Act passed the House on September 29, 2006 by a vote of 250-170. 162 Democrats opposed the bill.

What do prominent Democrats think and plan to do?

Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., said he regretted being talked out of filibustering tough new tribunal legislation signed by president Bush on Tuesday, and plans to seek new legislation to overturn portions of the bill.

“It’s a major, major retreat for us as a people,” Dodd said during a visit to Iowa on Tuesday afternoon. “It’s incredible what they did.”
