Washington’s New Power Lunch

My sources in Washington tell me President Bush, Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer enjoyed pasta salad and a chocolate dessert at lunch today.

On the agenda included Iraq, Darfur, immigration reform, energy policy, R and D tax credits that have expired and are waiting to be renewed, and “fiscal responsibility,” according to sources. Hoyer reminded the president that Tip O’Neill and Ronald Reagan worked together on tax reform and Social Security.

One source described these issues as “areas of bipartisanship and urgency.” These are all issues that have been emphasized by Democrats in the just-completed campaign.

On Iraq, they spoke of the Hamilton/Baker commission. Pelosi noted that while she is interested in what they have to say, she doesn’t view the report as definitive or binding in any way.

On immigration, Bush was giddy and anxious to push his amnesty program to allow millions of illegals to stay in the US.

Meanwhile, Rep. Rahm Emanuel has announced this afternoon that he will run for the #4 House Democratic Caucus position, that of caucus chairman. He had considered challenging Rep. Jim Clyburn for the #3 job, that of whip, but a source tells us that Pelosi engineered this announcement. A move against Clyburn, who is a former chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, would have been trouble for Pelosi, since she is already facing some discontent over the handling of the William Jefferson matter. Also, Emanuel is not popular with some Black Caucus members to begin with.
