GOP Senate Elections Tomorrow
Sources are telling me that while the democrats held the leadership elections this morning, much attention will be focused on the republican elections tomorrow as Trent Lott has officially decided to run for the number two post in the GOP leadership. And according to a source close to Lott, “we are closing in on victory.” Lott is running against Tennessean Lamar Alexander, a freshman senator and former governor. It appeared Alexander had secured enough commitments from his colleagues to lock in the job, but now all bets are off.
While there has been much speculation over the weeks, Lott had downplayed an interest in the job especially since his colleague Rick Santorum also wanted it. But with Santorum defeated in the election, the door swung wide open. One republican aide says John McCain has been quietly calling senators on Lott’s behalf.
Even before Santorum lost, a few republican senators had privately endorsed a Lott campaign for the job of party Whip. Acknowledging that Lott carries political and personal baggage (Storm Thurmond comments especially), these senators say his leadership style and abilities are desperately needed.
