We predict, they comply

PoliPundit, November 28th:

I hope [going up against Shelley Moore Capito in 2014] convinces the 75-year-old Rockefeller to retire instead.

The news today:

Democratic Sen. Jay Rockefeller will not run for reelection in 2014, passing up a bid for a sixth term and putting in play a Senate seat in deep red West Virginia.

I don’t know what you guys are doing today, but I am doing things that I enjoy — reading volume 2 of Game of Thrones; taking a walk in the mild weather MO is enjoying this week, giving my son a clean, good smelling bed.

I have two points to make here.

First, I hope that the GOP will do the smart thing here and clear the field for Capito. She is the most well known Republican in West Virginia and would have a good chance to win the general. We do not need to get into another “purist” debate here and nominate another Mourdock or Akin type fringe candidate who would give the seat away. Capito will do just fine.

Second, I would not rate West Virginia as a “deep red state” at all. Republicans have not held a Senate seat here in at least 50 years, and the Democrats still own a strong majority at the state level. This state is a little behind some other states in the South for instance, which voted Republican in presidential elections back in the 1980s, but usually Democratic for most everything else. Furthermore, with the exception of Capito, Republicans have a very thin bench here. That is why John Raese has run for the Senate four times under the Republican banner. The eventual outcome here will depend on how the political winds are blowing in 2014 and how strong the Democratic nominee is, but this is not a given at all for Capito given the Democrats’ strength in this state.

    • The Exposer on January 12, 2013 at 9:14 am

Mourdock and Akin were not “fringe candidates”, but respected Conservatives who had won office previously (Akin several times to Congress and Mourdock had won twice statewide). They were both well on their way to winning until they allowed themselves to make ill-advised comments on a subject that any Republican should steer clear of: rape.

The problem with Shelley Moore Capito is that she is weak on the life issue and isn’t a Conservative. That alone could cause her to lose a general election to a posturing good-ole-boy Democrat (such as current Gov. Earl Tomblin, whom the national Dems may try to recruit, since Nick Rahall is too iffy and would be foolish to give up 38 years of seniority in the House). I don’t advise running John Raese again, since he is now a perennial candidate. Would I prefer her to Democrat candidates ? Of course, it’s just that she may not be the best candidate we could put up, even if she is currently our most experienced GOP pol in the state.

      • TN Conservative on January 12, 2013 at 10:43 am

        Your points are well taken.

My point about Akin and Mourdock were not that they were “fringe” candidates in the traditional sense, but they both were weak candidates who were prone to gaffes. The comment by Akin regarding rape was about the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard any politician say. As for Mourdock, any credible Republican should have wiped the floor with Joe Donnelley. To lose to him in a presidential election year when Romney won the state by more than 10% does not speak well for Mourdock as a candidate.

The Republicans have a problem with regards to choosing the best candidate in primaries, and I myself am divided over the issue. I have always voted for the most conservative candidate with the best chance to win the general election, not the primary. I supported Ted Cruz and Mike Lee (UT) in their primaries because those are strongly conservative states, and there is no need to settle for a moderate squish there. However, I did not support nominating the likes of Christine O’Donnell, Ken Buck, and Sharron Angle in their respective states. O’Donnell in particular was horrible. If the Republicans had chosen better in Senate primaries recently, they would be close to or have a majority right now. Jim DeMint’s comment that he would rather have 30 purists standing on his side than a party majority is silly. Although I wish there were, there has never been an outright conservative majority in the Senate, even when Republicans were in control. As far as West Virginia is concerned, you can bet the Dems will have a strong candidate in that race. If the race turns into a match between that Dem and a Tea Party member at the county level no one has heard of, the Dem will win. Capito beats that alternative.

        • The Exposer on January 13, 2013 at 11:00 am

I disagree that Akin & Mourdock were weak candidates. Both were strongly supported by the grassroots (and as I cited above, they were already proven vote-getters). They were both leading in the polls. What did them in was the “x factor” that we can’t predict ahead of time. In this instance, both making statements (however well intended) that would turn out to be ill advised.

What is far more troubling to me is the appalling double standard applied to candidates for both parties. Democrats can be (for lack of a better word) criminals and win office. You had in the past two election cycles one prominent Democrat who lied about his military service and won handily (Blumenthal in CT), yet in Oregon back in ’96, a Republican freshman Congressman who “exaggerated” was run out of office (and the state) on a rail (Wes Cooley). Cooley is “infamous”, but Blumenthal is “respected.” Cooley lied on campaign materials, Blumenthal lied for years.

The other example of a Democrat fraud, one lying for years about her ethnic background in order to benefit her career, and she defeats an incumbent Republican in Massachusetts. Can one imagine if Elizabeth “Fauxcahontas” Warren had been a Republican ? Republicans are held to standards that saints could not measure up to (and even at that, they are ripped apart).

Add in that the Republican establishment doesn’t even WANT Conservatives that will go against their “go along to get along” mentality in DC (heaven forbid they’ll be embarrassed by them on the cocktail party circuit in Georgetown). I was not sorry to see Dick Lugar go down, a crypto-Democrat so “well respected” by the opposition that they didn’t even put up a Democrat against him in 2006 (which never happens). I think he was similarly quite happy to see a Democrat succeed him.

There are valid points you do make about some Tea Party candidates. Some simply aren’t ready for prime time and need more seasoning, while some were already failures pretending to be winners (the infamous example of Sharron Angle in NV, whose candidacy I opposed from the get-go because of her prior losses and reputation of being a hysterical prima donna).

Conversely, we have poor non-Tea Party candidates (such as Connie Mack 4 in FL), that end up pissing off the base (his appalling comments calling reasonable laws on immigration enforcement in AZ to Nazi Germany), and also fail to shape a message to get them elected (and Bill Nelson is a highly unpopular pol, yet he lucked out running against two poor candidates in a row !). Even Tommy Thompson in WI, who should’ve beaten a radical leftist lesbian got completely mowed over. I do find it funny the examples so many cite of Mourdock & Akin, but yet those same folks remain deadly silent on Mack & Thompson, the non-Tea Partiers.

Capito could herself end up another Mack/Thompson just as easily as a controversial no-name Tea Partier in WV.

No conservative is going to roll up their sleeves and help the country when a Dem is in the White House. They would rather burn it all down, than have success on someone else’s watch.

Conservatives would rather buy gold and sit on their thumbs, than participate.

“The Klan would drive through our neighborhood shooting at us, shooting into our homes,” recalled Hicks, 66, who grew up in Bogalusa, La., and has been a civil rights activist in the District for more than 35 years. “The black men in the community wouldn’t stand for it. You shoot at us, we shoot back at you. I’m convinced that without our guns, my family and many other black people would not be alive today.”

It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our government’s reckless fiscal policies. … Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here.’ Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. In fact, the rest of the nation is forced into “gun free zones”, which factually translates to: “SLAUGHTER ZONES”. Check the facts, moron, and you’ll see these mass murders are occuring in your liberal created “slaughter zones”, which are a 100% proven failure.

The NRA ad clearly points out the leftist hypocrisy, you idiot, and we note that you gleefully ignore the double standards and embrace the hypocrisy of your communist masters.

Mindless sheep, that’s all you leftist fools are, mindless sheep.

          • I Am on January 20, 2013 at 6:58 am

Are you arguing that the children of the POTUS shouldn’t be protected by Secret Service or that schools should have more guns on site? You do know that the only armed people at that school are the Secret Service right? The schools own security doesn’t carry. The fable that they do is just that.

        • Jay Ace on January 17, 2013 at 5:43 pm

You should look into that NRA “fact” about armed guards at Obama’s kids’ school.

They lied to you. Because they know that you are not that bright and easily led.

The secret service is armed, but nothing more.

            Jay Ace:

“The secret service is armed, but nothing more.”

Why would the secret service be armed? These are just children.

        • Jim,MtnView,Ca,USA on January 17, 2013 at 6:57 pm

Seems like we need to disarm anyone near Obama and his family and declare the White House a “gun free” zone.
If these policies work, there’ll be no trouble, right? Right?

          • Jay Ace on January 18, 2013 at 1:54 am

False equivalence is a bright and shiny object for right wingers like Jim, supporting their love of uncovering supposed hypocrisies.

The NRA views you as a tool.

          • Sgt. Kilroy on January 18, 2013 at 9:28 am

I always know when the liberal trolls are defeated and out of talking points. They always start to bleat “false equivalence” whenever they know their foolish arguments have been thoroughly destroyed.

Haahaa, another liberal troll sinks back into his chair, defeated.

          • The POTUS on January 18, 2013 at 12:31 pm

Only a true Guns Over People party supporter could think the average school kid has the same or higher level of security need then that of the children of the POTUS.

I know there is a better way to explain this but I don’t think I can dumb it down more then that for you.

          • POTUS is dumbed down too much already on January 18, 2013 at 1:06 pm

^ Only a true baby murdering liberal hypocrite could think that banning inanimate objects will help save children while his own party gladly supports the wholesale slaughter of millions of innocent babies.

It doesn’t matter how much we dumb it down for the left, they will still be the party of baby slaughtering hypocrisy and their howls about gun control only expose them for the liars and frauds that they truly are.

            Idiots, all of them.

Abortion isn’t murder. Giving a dangerous unstable person like you access to guns well that’s just plain stupid. It’s no wonder you and your politically dead party are okay with it.

If you want to know what is right and smart just find out what the GOPs position is then do the opposite. 9 out of 10 times that’s probably the good choice.

          • The POTUS on January 18, 2013 at 2:21 pm

          • The Trolls on January 18, 2013 at 7:32 pm

Baby murderers? Do you mean babies that murder, or the murder of babies? Either way, it seems that you have lost the argument when you resort to raving like a lunatic about babies and murder.

How about that NRA? Have they lost it or what? Turns out that the “11 armed guards” at Obama’s kids’ school, well, only 2 are on duty at any one time…and they aren’t armed. Oops. But no matter, because the ends justify the means, and if the NRA is going to lie their asses off, who is to fault them? Lying and propaganda is OK if you are a right winger.

Then the big back peddle…the supposed double standard that the Secret Service shouldn’t be armed to protect the Presidents’ children. Hilarious, who would have thought! Go for it, that will play well with American opinion!

Blind hate, irrational fears? How did you get that out of those posts?

You’re divorced from reality. The nation has a very real issue with gun violence, violence and the gun culture. Something needs to be done and more guns isn’t the right thing to do.

The good thing is the GOP is so out of touch with reality on this issue and so many others. It will be such a long time before the GOP wins an election again that by the time get into office it will be too late to do anything about the changes that will become law.

The congress blocking laws that makes the lives of normal people safer is going to resonate almost as much as the damage they are doing to the economy

Voted YES on prohibiting suing gunmakers & sellers for gun misuse. (Apr 2003)

That’s why the GOP just cleaned up the last election right. Unskewed polls right. Every person that isn’t lost even in the GOP knows the party is in big trouble. You need to get out of the bubble. Get your facts from places like your eyes, elections not Fox, Breitbart and Limbaugh.

The Democrats just won an election with 8% unemployment. The GOP is for sure losing the next election and probably the one after that too before they have a real shot at the White House again. You did see the people that the GOP ran for the POTUS in the last election right? The GOP doesn’t even have a viable candidate at the moment. Plus it will take some time before people trust the GOP with the economy again after the disaster they made of it under GWB.

You can only imagine the genius that replied to your comment with a saying they learned when they were 6 years old. The last time they learned and absorbed some knowledge.

GOP members give you great things like unskewed polls, anti science, birtherism and see hate filled idiots like Limbaugh as pundits.

The great minds that see an elected president who tries to undo the damage their party did the last time they were in office as Nazi like and fight him on every point even those that make complete sense. You really can’t get into the mind of people that have this much willful brain damage and are proud of it.
