Who are “the rich” in Congress?

August 23, 2011

All of this anger at “the rich”…except it isn’t “the rich” at all, it is the Republican “rich”… if you are a “progressive” – you get a pass.

7 out of the top 10 richest members of Congress are Democrats. The wealth of those 7 ($570.3 million) is greater than the total of the lower 40 ($489.8 million), Republican and Democrat.

There are more Republicans on the list, 31 out of 50, and the total of those 31 is greater than the Democrats ($906.16 million to $712.46 million) but the average wealth per member of the 19 Democrats is over $8.2 million more than the 31 Republicans.

Roll Call just released the list of the 50 richest members of Congress for this year.

Seems that there is a better distribution of wealth in the Republican “rich” caucus than on the Democrat side – the free market has “spread the wealth” pretty efficiently where the Democrat wealth is concentrated in fewer members – it’s positively “progressive”, isn’t it?

There would seem to be no more hypocritical position than to rail against “the rich” when you are “rich”… but that is the sort of inconsistent position – bordering on self loathing – that is required to be a Democratic politician these days.

    In fairness,that isn’t really Kerry’s money. It’s his wife’s dead husband’s.

How about those democrats set an example and give up every dollar of income over $200,000 and cut a check to the government?

You need to make it clear. The bottom 40 members of Congress are not averaging 12 million in wealth.

    – “All of this anger at “the rich”…” – Nobody’s angry at the rich. We just want the top marginal tax rate to go back to what it was before the Bush Tax cuts. Just because we want them to pay more doesn’t mean we hate them. Heck, we’ll be paying more too.

    – “There would seem to be no more hypocritical position than to rail against “the rich” when you are “rich”…” – If you really were railing against the rich. But we do rail against you. You keep peddling that crap about the rich creating jobs if you cut their taxes. Ten years later, where are the jobs? Not in the US. That experiment failed. Wake up.

Its like you learn my mind! You seem to understand a lot about this, such as you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you simply could do with a few p.c. to power the message home a bit, but instead of that, that is fantastic blog. A fantastic read. I’ll definitely be back.
