LIVE Blogging from Washington Briefing Summit

Today is a great day for conservatives. Here in Washington, D.C., the largest gathering of social conservatives in the country takes place this weekend during the Family Research Council’s “Washington Briefing.” From FRC founder Dr. James Dobson to renowned politicians and pundits to all nine 2008 Republican presidential candidates, many of the most influential social and political leaders will be speaking in efforts to revive their conservative base and prove the country that “values voters: are alive and well. Hillary, be afraid.

Now on to the speakers:

The first speaker is Tony Perkins, President of the Family Research Council. Perkins begins by defining a values voter and explaining why they are important. Values voters are those who believe out values are foundational to a secure and just society. The defense of our values cannot be left alone to politicians; it is up to voters to make their voices heard. Values voters have had a huge impact on elections, most notably those in 2004.

According to Perkins, this is the agenda of the values voter:

1. Restoring a culture of life
a. Protect the rights of unborn children
b. Protect marriage as between one man and one woman – this “must be
enshrined” in the US Constitution.
c. Children do best when raised in a traditional family
d. Founders did not believe that “freedom of religion does not mean freedom from
religion.”
2. Advance a culture of decency
3. Support our national defense
a. Recognize that America must be protected from those around the world who
seek to hurt us.
b. “The many faces of tyranny have one thing in common: they do not govern
from the consent of the governed.”
4. Responsible foreign policy
a. Wherever we go, we must take with us the message of faith, freedom, and
family
b. We care about improving the lives of others around the world
5. Our values are rooted in truth; we must stand for them even if they are not well-
received.

Sitting in a crowded conference room packed with excited conservatives from all over America, I am so encouraged to know that there are so many active citizens, both young and old, who care about their country and recognize the importance of holding on to our values which have made America the great nation it is today. I hope the liberals are paying close attention, because we are going to give them a run for their money
