Private Health Health Insurance, Euros and Pence
In Europe, I have used my share of health care both on base in Military Treatment Facilities and off base going privately.
There is a version of TRICARE that you can use off base on the economy but the thing that always stuck out was that when you obtained health care privately, you always knew what it was going to cost up front with no surprises. Some health facilities had flyers listing procedures, tests and the cost. Other facilities would have a big sign like you had gone into a fast food place listing how much everything was. I thought it was great and that is an area where I can think the US System could learn from. There is nothing worse than asking your civilian doctor here what a test is going to cost and he stares at you with a blank look.
Even though I would sometimes seek private care on the local economy I often never bothered with the additional paper work to get re-imbursed through TRICARE. The costs were too small and frankly, I considered my time to be more important.
With all the recent discussion on private health care in Europe, I decided to find out for myself what would it cost a family of five to go private?
I went to Tesco which sells for Axa and I also went to a price comparison site just to see what it would cost to get a better then average policy.
Total cost to go private for a family of five in US Dollars?
$114.40 a month!
Far better than what Governor Charlie Crist did to the people of Florida with Cover Florida aka “Crap Care.”
No wonder less than 5,000 signed up.

“$114.40 a month!” – What? Where? That sounds great, but is the difference between private and public health care really interesting? Here in Canada private health care insurance doesn’t cover many areas…
Take care, Elli
