Red Lobster, In the Black
On March 19, 2009, I wrote about the results of Darden Restaurants;
My grandfather did not fare real well in the 1930’s and I remember him telling me what his family had to eat. A red lobster was not on the menu in his house.
The only thing in a state of depression at Red Lobster is the lobster being eaten at a table of people talking about “the depression.”
Please pass the butter and tell Congress while things are not the best, it is not as bad as some people are saying.
Red Lobster was in the news again last week;
Darden Restaurants Inc. late Tuesday reported fiscal fourth-quarter net income of $123 million, or 87 cents a share, compared to net income of $101.8 million, or 71 cents a share, in the year-earlier period. Sales rose to $1.97 billion from $1.82 billion.
Please pass the butter and the lobster fork!

While the OL may see the economy as improving, perhaps he should tell that to the millions of unwillingly unemployed, to the state governments ready to default on their commitments, to the corporations forced to move their operations overseas due to punitive taxes, and to the investors in America who have lost faith…
If the OL ever stops getting his thrill on Capital Hill and decides to use his position to actually work toward improving America, I’ll be surprised. All I’ve seen through hid bovine scatology is a hatred of Conservatives and a desire to mask any criticism of the leftists in the Democrat Party.
Those who use diverse measures are an abomination to the Lord. Measuring GOP one way and DNC another is just that. It’s detestable and dishonest at best.
OL is not worthy of his place here. Poli you should replace him with someone less inclined to lap up the water in white house toilet bowls…

Another fine Democratic politician!
Friday June 26, 2009, 11:54 PM
DETROIT — City Councilwoman Monica Conyers pleaded guilty to bribery charges Friday, becoming the latest Detroit politician taken down by scandal and marking a victory for federal prosecutors in their nearly two-year investigation into city corruption.
Conyers, the wife of powerful Democratic congressman John Conyers who won her seat in 2005 largely on her popular husband’s name, admitted in federal court to taking cash from a Houston-based company in exchange for her vote on a city sludge-treatment contract.
The normally fiery 44-year-old Conyers spoke quietly while entering her plea in federal court, and left the courthouse without commenting to reporters, free on bond. She faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine when she’s sentenced.

If you think that Red Lobster is a good restaurant you must be a redneck.
Jesus – get some class, dude. Is Chili’s your 2nd favorite restaurant?

Muskegon County, Michigan
It was announced today (June 27th) that the unemployment rate increased to 15.8% for May in the county. I guess people in Muskegon will be happy to hear Red Lobster is doing so well.
By the end of the summer Liftech is closing by the company which will lay off 374 people. I’d bet on McDonald’s $1 meals around here. Or the food pantries and church free meals.

Red Lobster better have good business. I just checked and the median pay for a waiter/waitress is $3.37. No business-No tips.
If they are doing so damn good shouldn’t they up that wage?
Hopefully not, with Obama’s new taxes over the next 3 1/2 yrs it would probably move them to a tax bracket that will break them.

Last time I went to Red Lobster it gave me the trots. I’ll never eat there again. Just disgusting.
June 27th, 2009 at 6:38 pm
trots?!?
from urban dictionary
DEF: Explosive, uncontrollable diarrhea which often results in excessive swearing and/or fist clenching.
USED IN A SENTENCE: Please help me dear lord baby Jesus, that lobster and butter gave me an awful case of the trots.

They (liberals) consider Christians and in particular Evangelicals as a threat. –comment by Oak Leaf in an earlier thread.
I’m not sure what you mean. Can you compare it to the hate that Mike Huchabee and Evangelicals had against Mitt Romney and Mormons OR Rev. Wright (another great minister) railing against da evil JEWS?

Well another point about Red Lobster–Just remember, it is better to have a lobster on your piano, than a crab on your organ.

I confess: I like Red Lobster (next to haggis)…but if I can, I prefer to get my seafood at other places, where its cooked a bit more refined.

On a road trip we ate at Red Lobster in Valencia, CA. After driving all day I was ready to eat and have a nice drink. There wasn’t much available around the hotel. Settled for RL though it was packed. Couldn’t be that bad if it was packed, I thought.
I ordered wood oven roasted trout and a martini. They came back and said no trout. I settled for salmon. Martini came and it tasted like water. I sent it back and it tasted the same. Probably just poured it into another glass and who knows what else. I couldn’t see the bar from our table.
Salmon was OK. Overall the experience sucked. Would not see any need to go to anther RL unless I was desperate.

Maybe one reason Red Lobster is doing so well is their prices haven’t changed to reflect the actual cost of lobster. Lobster prices have plummeted due to a large surplus of live lobsters on the market, see http://food.theatlantic.com/sustainability/the-mystery-of-cheap-lobster.php

Of course certain businesses are going to do well during an economic crisis. People are still going to eat, but there choices are going to change with their level of income.
I imagine pawn shops are thriving right now, BTW.

The outward tenseness of this recession does seem to have receded. My husband has noticed this more around our area, dealing with building supply Companies, etc.
However, does this lightening up of the market place mean that our financial woes are ebbing too?
I personally don’t think so. I see these better figures in retail and some restaurants as reflecting people getting used to the fact we are in tough times. The “shock,” though, is gone, as individuals are just trying to survive, go out and do their business in as normal of a manner as they possibly can — that is why there is a small uptick in the market.
But, the economic impact of these huge deficits, the value of the dollar in jeopardy, global uncertainty, the toxic effect of massive unemployment, trust abused or broken in the private sector are all variables that don’t make for a good economic foundation. This is why I continue to believe we are only on a brief turn-out on this road to recovery, and the steep grade lies still ahead.
