GOP Is Singing, “Bye, Bye Social Conservatives”

By Oak Leaf ~ June 24th, 2009 @ 11:45 am

Days ago;

Senator John Ensign apologized to Republican senators today for his nine-month affair with a campaign staffer.

Hours ago;

Columbia, S.C. — Gov. Mark Sanford admitted Wednesday he’s been having an affair with a woman he visited on a secret trip to Argentina and said he’ll resign as head of the Republican Governors Association.

Sanford, a rumored 2012 presidential candidate, refused to say whether he’ll leave office.

Politics is real simple when you need/want to court Christian social conservatives. You only sleep with your wife or husband. Is that real difficult?

Myself and many others will pray for Governor Sanford and his family.

But what I can say is that many of those that are praying for him will no longer support him politically.

Some will say that a man who violates his vows before God, will ultimately honor no promise to man.

Some will say aiding him by keeping him in politics will be the destruction of the Sanford family.

Mark Foley, Larry Craig, David Vitter, John Ensign, Mark Sanford, who/what is next?

Update: Tom Bevan’s reaction at Real Clear Politics.

    Gingrich didn’t make your list? He seems to want to run in 2012 or maybe he just wants to sell book. I’m sure there are some others I can’t think of.

    1) Get away for a break after a tough state legislative session.
    2) Get away for a break after a tough state legislative session by hiking Appalachian Trail
    3) Get away for a break after a tough state legislative session by going to Argentina, wanted to do “something” exotic.
    4) Get away for a break after a tough state legislative session decided at the last minute to go to Argentina and drive along its coastline.
    5) Get away for a break after a tough state legislative session to get laid.

    So down goes Sanford, but of course I’d still vote for Sanford over Bush or Obama.

    How long until he resigns?

    Oak Leaf – Please shut up. I am not sure what Mark Sanford having an affair has to do with the GOP losing social conservatives. His affair his between him, his family and the state he represents, it has nothing to so with social conservatives.

    You are such a fraud and a liar. You are happy to see Obama appoint more Supreme Court justices who will rule that partial birth abortion is a right. So, you are just as guilty as Sanford.

    re: Bye,Bye social conservatives. C’mon–a bit hyperbolic wouldn’t you say? So the man sinned. We all sin to some degree. Where are the So Cons gonna go? Are they going to vote Democratic? Also, at least the Republicans who have been involved in sex scandals generally admit their sins rather than blame others.

    [Social Conservatives, in particular Evangelical Christians, historically were never involved in politics to any large degree. Bringing them in politically was a recent phenomena. IMO, these actions will cause many social conservatives, in particular those that are Evangelical Christians to simply going back home to not voting at all. Politics is not very important to this group. OL]

    Let me see – Teddy sleept with practically every women in the Belt. Donkey ran a brothel from his house. Slick Willie is still saying the derinition of is is. California Senator Feinstein gave money to her husband. Murtha wants a stupid airport for a few people. Obama just violated the law by firing the Inspector General. Debbie Stabenaw didn’t put out for her husband so he had to see a hooker.

    Everyone of you, including OakLeaf, have missed the real story. He went off on a lark, did NOT execute the appropriate transfer of power in the interval, hence was in dereliction of duty of his office. OL you know damn well the idea of chain of command. If you decided to go off on a 3 day binge without informing your adjutant and the MSgt at a minimum you know damn well you are in dereliction.

    I was under the impression he told his staff he was going to be gone and that he’d probably be on that hiking trail?

    Glen Beck has had Mark Sanford on as a frequent guest on his tv and radio show.

    He jumped ship today and had Napolitano guest host for him. Maybe he didn’t feel like talking about.

    As an observer and independent, this cannot be good news for the social conservatives. That constituency has made it an issue to hold themselves to a higher standard. The modern GOP and the Democratic party have become a wash when it comes to government spending. The GOP proved that under a GOP Congress. Then, social issues became the debate between the two parties. Now, it would appear that Republicans and Democrats are now are the same on social issues because one cannot DISASSOCIATE ones personal life if they want credibility on social issues. I guess that leaves one area left for debate between the two parties…National Security.

    Phil Crane? Is that really you? Hs.
