Uppercase/Lowercase “C”

By Oak Leaf ~ May 14th, 2009 @ 8:34 am

William F. Buckley, Jr. passed away on February 27, 2008 and I think the “C”onservative movement died with him too.

Case in point, the large number of conservatives that supported John McCain. The excuses were all “fun” to read but they distilled down to seeking power solely for the sake of power not ideals. This was exemplified by the actions of the Senator from Texas;

Last week, John Cornyn, the chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, promised not to endorse anyone in Florida’s Senate primary. But what’s a promise when a Senate seat is at stake? Cornyn came out for Crist, as did Sen. Mitch McConnell, the Republican minority leader.

For a couple years on talk radio, conservative publications, blogs (including this one), Charlie Crist has rightfully been called on the carpet for countless reasons.

Florida in 2010 will test my hypothesis that the “C”onservative movement is in fact dead. There remains a conservative movement whose sole stake for existence is the pursuit of political power.

I pray that I am wrong.

I am one of those conservatives that voted for John McCain rather than throw my vote to someone who could not win (like some on this site).

As Obama gets ready to name a SCOTUS member I can still say a vote for John McCain was smarter than a vote for the MOST liberal US Senator that will remold the court in a liberal tint.

Sometimes people are not afforded the luxury of having everything they want in life. This applies to “things,” lifestyle, even family members. I also believe you can extend not having everything you may want to ideology and the political candidates who have big or little “c’s” behind their names.

So many aspects of our culture, our Constitution, our very society are being challenged and pushed back by a “take-over,” in our government by a very liberal group of people. Had people chosen the best at hand, rather than waiting for the “perfectly groomed” conservative candidate, I think our current situation would be less perilous with a better chance of reconstituting conservative values in the future.

It doesn’t seem like anyone really knows what conservatism means. Social conservatives are fine with big government as long as they have the “freedom” to force their myths on the rest of us. Fiscal conservatives are fine with government spending as long as it props up their favorite industry.

The entire movement seems enamored with torture, in fact that seems to be the only thing conservatives agree on is the need to torture false confessions out of brown people.

Ya I’m not too worried that the GOP is permanently dead. There are generally only two parties to choose from. People will eventually want to vote the other way although the government will be getting larger no matter what happens that’s for sure.

    Yes, it is dead.

You were one of them many backstabbers and gravediggers, with tears of joy streaming down your face.

    Eh tu, Oak?

I didn’t support McCain. I reluctantly voted for him against Barack Obama.
I would have voted for Eisenhower instead of Adlai Stevenson,or Nixon against George McGovern.

    Earl,

As Shaq says about Stan Van Gundy: He is the master of panic.

I really think we’re better of without McCain. Whether he won or lost wasn’t really of any real consequence. The GOP needs to rebuild eventually anyway.

    How cliché.

    John Rove

If you are defining waterboarding as “torture,” than you are talking about THREE people who were “tortured.” The entire movement seems enamored with torture…aren’t you being just a wee bit facetious!

With that much hype, John Rove, you’re posts are worth as much as a fictitious screen play!

  10. invalid10

Jan- you’re claiming that only 3 people were water boarded?

  11. Jan

Yes, all the quotes on waterboarding refer to only “3″ people who experienced this treatment — albeit, these three were interrogated numerous times to waterboarding.

On the contrary, it seems obvious that everyone in the chain of command was covering himself or herself by disseminating information about the harsh interrogations of three al Qaeda leaders.

Quote is contained in the last paragraph of this article
