Just heard from Bob Novak on CNN’s Inside Politics that senator Judd Gregg (R-NH) may be ready to become a judge or cabinet member, now that New Hampshire has a Republican governor who can appoint his replacement. This potentially throws another GOP seat into play in 2004.

Why do GOP senators retire so soon after being elected? Democrats seem to go on forever. That may be one of the major reasons Democrats have so many seats in the Senate even though the vast majority of states are conservative.
