John Kerry announced that he’s forming an exploratory committee for the presidency on Meet The Press. I always thought Kerry was soporific, but his appearance today was particularly sleep-inducing. The only other presidential candidate who is better at putting people to sleep is Joe Lieberman. If Kerry gets the Democratic nomination (which he won’t) I’m going to invest a lot of money in coffee so that I can stay awake when he’s on TV.

On a more serious note, Kerry is a radical, anti-war, tax-and-spend ideologue, who’s desperately trying to cover up his ideology. Republicans would love to run against a Massachusetts Liberal like Michael Dukakis; but Kerry doesn’t want anything to do with the stench of loserdom that emanates from Dukakis. “I am not Michael Dukakis, and Michael Dukakis is not me, and the first person who would tell you that is Michael Dukakis,” he says.

No, Kerry is not Dukakis. A Kerry candidacy would be worse. Dukakis was a governor. Kerry is a senator. Senators get to cast lots of votes that come back to haunt them. That’s why JFK was the last senator to get elected president. Senate gasbags also drone on endlessly in debates and say some very stupid things. Kerry’s track record on this is as bad as anyone else’s. For example, he said some dumb things during the 1991 gulf war debate that Tim Russert threw back at him today on Meet The Press.

If Kerry is the Democratic nominee, I’m sure the Bush people will find a treasure trove of quotable quotes by Kerry in the Senate record. They should hold back the worst of the quotes and leak it to the press the Thursday before the election.
