A Lott of backlash
While everyone is focusing on what Trent Lott should do, few are focusing on what would happen if he were to step down. I think that, if Lott were to step down, the backlash would be a tremendous help to Republicans. It would be like the Clinton impeachment, which made Clinton a martyr and brought out black voters in droves in 1998 and 2000. To conservatives, Lott would have lost his position for being stupid, not evil. It will reinforce conservative hatred of the mainstream media. It will shake conservatives out of their post-election complacency and make them fight harder.
Thus Lott’s stepping down would be a boon for conservatives for more than the obvious reason of getting this story off the front pages.
