Now that Bush administration is trying to decide whether it should weigh in on the Michigan Affirmative Action cases, here’s a Washington Post poll that shows how Americans feel about the issue:

In order to give minorities more opportunity, do you believe race or ethnicity should be a factor when deciding who is hired, promoted, or admitted to college, or that hiring, promotions, and college admissions should be based strictly on merit and qualifications other than race or ethnicity?

Race or ethnicity should be a factor – 5%

Should be based strictly on merit and qualifications other than race and ethnicity – 92%

Don’t know – 3%

86% of African-Americans are in favor of not using race or ethnicity. There is no gender gap. It’s virtually impossible to find a public policy with more public distaste for it.
