In a series of disciplined votes, Republicans are holding down spending in the Senate. Even John McCain and Lincoln Chafee are voting with their Republican colleagues, with Democrat Zell Miller joining them on occasion. (Seeing McCain and Chafee vote with their party on close votes is becoming almost as unusual as seeing Miller vote with his party. So this is a pleasant surprise.)

Meanwhile, John Kerry and John Edwards are off campaigning – a circumstance which may be decisive when more votes are cast tonight. Will presidential campaigning by Democratic senators cost the Democrats some party-line votes in the Senate?

UPDATE: Here’s a Dallas Morning News story on this.
