Democratic Woes
The Note says that this year’s Democratic presidential candidates will have even more trouble than usual raising money:
We continue to believe that the Six Pack is going to have more trouble raising money (even at $2,000 a clip) than most analysts believe.Chalk it up to Clinton/Gore fatigue; or the lack of broad-based passion for any of this year’s crop; or the Bush-Cheney economy; or all the breath-holding for Dennis Kucinich, but all of these guys are spending a lot of time in VERY small groups and on the phone trying to scrounge up the checks.
Amen. In fact the situation is even worse for Democrats. Now that McCain-Feingold is law, Bush can raise hard money in $2000 increments instead of $1000. At that rate, he’ll accumulate a warchest of $200-300 million for the 2004 race. Meanwhile, the Democratic supply of soft money has been cut off and they have to rely entirely on hard money – a major weakness for them. Combine that with the timing of the 2004 conventions and you have a disaster waiting to happen.
