Don’t Mess With Texas

As I’ve noted before, the Texas Democratic legislators’ running away to Oklahoma may backfire on them. Texas Governor Rick Perry is probably going to call a special legislative session in July that would undo the unfair 1990 Democratic gerrymandering of Texas’ congressional districts.

The difference between a “regular” session of the legislature and a “special” session? Republicans would need only a majority, instead of two-thirds, of state senators in order to bring redistricting up for a vote. The upshot is, that by redrawing the congressional districts more fairly, Texas will likely send six more Republicans to the US House of Representatives.
