Mickey Kaus correctly predicted that the LAT would release its Schwarzenegger scandal story today and it did. Will Arnold be hurt? Perhaps by a few percentage points, enough to make the election uncertain. Kaus also thinks that the Rush Limbaugh scandal that came out at the same time was a pre-emptive move by pro-Arnold National Enquirer publisher David Pecker to drown out the Arnold scandal.
In the long history of dirty pre-election scandal-mongering, the worst has got to be Dubya’s DUI in 2000, which cost him the popular vote.
In my book, the second-worst pre-election media hit was the 60 Minutes show on the Sunday before election 2002. It consisted of two pieces calculated to boost black turnout – a long puff piece on black Texas Senate candidate Ron Kirk (featuring ultra-liberal kook Molly Ivins as an objective analyst) and an outrageous conspiracy piece on how white people infected black people with AIDS.
