Real Sacrifice
While reading this touching account of a Marine’s father (link via RealClearPolitics.com), I couldn’t help but think of the screeching by Bill Maher and others after 9/11 that all Bush had asked us to do was go shopping, when so many were so ready to make real sacrifice. Of course they completely ignored the President’s encouragements to citizens to give blood and donate to charities that were helping the 9/11 victims and, more important, his warning that we were now at war and that it would not be easy. Those of us with loved ones who have been or currently are serving in the military knew immediately what that meant. It meant that for those in the service, it was time to step up to the plate and risk their lives. For their loved ones, it was a time for extreme sacrifice as well, as Frank Schaeffer so vividly details in his op/ed linked to above. For Bill Maher and others it meant asking Americans to stop driving their SUVs and start driving hybrid cars. That difference in thinking alone explains some of the red/blue state divide.
