AP-Ipsos Poll on the Economy
According to a new AP-Ipsos Poll, on a scale of 1 to 7, 52% of American rate the economy a 5, 6, or 7. Only 27% rate it a 1, 2, or 3. 20% rate it a 4, which is roughly equivalent to improving but slowly. Only 9% of Americans think the economy will be weaker or much weaker six months from now.
This is where the payroll number this morning factors into the equation. Jayson is right. The household survey is much more reliable. The Bush Administration should have thrown out the payroll survey years ago, but it is too late now. However, this morning’s number jolts me because I know the effect it will have on that 20%. It will, when connected to energy prices, cause them to wobble.
This is why President Bush must show decisive leadership now! He must call Congress back in a special session and ask them to pass an energy bill to deal with the crisis. President Bush would then win no matter the result. If an energy bill passes, he will have acted to avert a crisis. If an energy bill fails, the Democrats will again look like obstructionists acting against the national interest.
