Cognitive Dissonance: Media Desperation Edition

Headline: “U.S. Consumer Confidence Erodes in Early August”
First Graf: “U.S. consumer confidence deteroriated in early August, reversing July’s increases . . .”

Hmm.

On the other hand, here’s the other headline and lede that they could have written:

Headline: “Personal Financial Conditions of U.S. Consumers Soar in early-August”
First Graf: “A measure of how Americans feel about their present financial conditions rose sharply in August, with the current conditions portion of the University of Michigan’s Index of Consumer Sentiment rising 3 percent, from July’s level of 105.2.”

I think I know why they approached it from the other angle:

August 1996 – current conditions sentiment index = 107.8
August 2004 – current conditions sentiment index = 108.4

Yep. That explains it.
