Tonight

Well, tonight is the big night…President Bush accepts the presidential nomination of his party for the second time. Recent weeks have seen the President rise in the polls as his favorables improve and his opponent’s falls. What do I think President Bush must accomplish tonight?

1. While Americans increasingly see the economy as improving, some Americans still have not sensed the gains. Tonight is an excellent moment for President Bush to describe his numerous economic accomplishments and lay out a bold vision for future economic growth.

2. He can tout his education success and explain his vision for building on his record of success in this area. The President can also address the issue of healthcare and social security and emphasize that the deficit will disappear with continued economic growth.

3. Most Americans support the war on terror but need to be re-assured on Iraq. If President Bush explains why we must win the war in Iraq to win the war on terror, I am confident the American people will rally behind him.

In short, President Bush has the opportunity to set the parameters of the debate for the rest of the campaign. As long as Americans perceive the economy to be on the mend, he can emphasize the foreign policy aspect where his opponent is so weak, as Zell Miller brilliantly described in detail Wednesday night.

Prior to the President’s speech, we will hear from three GOP superstars – General Tommy Franks, Senate candidate and former HUD Secretary Mel Martinez, and the three-term Governor of the Empire State, George E. Pataki. It should be a great night, a night for us to remember the accomplishments of the past four years and prepare for the four years to come.

Imagine the final weekend when President Bush campaigns with the popular Governors of America’s largest states, the most popular Senator in America, the former Governor and present Senator from Georgia, the former Mayor of New York City, and Laura Bush. No wonder the radical left is losing their grip on reality.
