Flu Pandemic Funds, “Those Little Porky Things”

By Oak Leaf ~ April 27th, 2009 @ 4:49 am

Years ago as a Reservist, I participated in an exercise called “Dark Winter.” That exercise forever changed how I would view government preparation for pandemics and greatly influenced my unwavering support in the Bush Administrations preparation for same.

In Florida we take hurricanes seriously and “plan for the worst and pray for the best.” The best feeling in the world is when that hurricane that was heading right at you, defies the forecast and turns out to sea. It is not a time for swearing that you filled your automobiles with gas, filled the bath tub with water and stocked up on batteries for no good reason.

Earlier this year, pandemic funding was stripped out of a stimulus bill;

The House of Representatives had included $900 million in pandemic preparedness funds in its version of the massive stimulus package, but it appeared that all but $50 million was removed by the conference committee that ironed out differences between the House and Senate versions, said Richard Hamburg, government relations director for the nonpartisan, nonprofit group Trust for America’s Health (TFAH).

How did Senator Chuck Schummer describe this stripping?

“All those little porky things that the House put in, the money for the [National] Mall or sexually transmitted diseases or the flu pandemic, they’re all out,” Schumer said.

A virus is very “little” but I am absolutely amazed at Schummers ability to foresee that it would be a “porky” flu.

Are you suggesting that government is not ALWAYS part of the problem?

I admire you for your attempts to introduce some realism to conservative dogma

  2. Earl

Oak Leaf. Everybody agrees that certain situations require government intervention(pandemics, natural disasters). The problem is all the other waste that is being appropriated. BTW,the medicine for this wswine flu was bought by the last administgration, not your idol BO.

  3. MI Conservative

We don’t need more money for epidemics any more!

Obama, the chosen one, the messiah, the gifted one, can stretch out his hands over the multitde and heal them.

  4. John Rove

    Earl:

What government program do you think is wasteful?

  5. Aaron

Our military efforts in SW Asia has made the world a safer place. Too bad Oak Leaf opposed the war. For if he had, John McCain might be our President right now and we could pick up right where President Bush left off and take the fight to the terrorists. Instead, we have a liberal in the White House who is going on an apology tour rather than remaining on offense.

  6. John Rove

    BTW:
I would argue that farm subsidies are a huge waste of money and very counter-productive but I don’t hear anyone liberal or conservative who wants to end them.

  7. Earl

Rove,I beleive in limited government. We do not need a dept.of agriculture, nor energy, commerce, hud, education. The list of individual ,programs is far too long.
I believe that in case of emergencies, yes, the govt.should be prepared. Fine. But make sure it is for the right things, not like thye katrina fraud.
In case of a pandemic, yeas i believe the, governemtn needs to play a role.
Protecting the country is a role the federal govt is supposed to play.

When will Oak Leaf admit that he was wrong to oppose the war in South West Asia?

  10. Earl

Chuck Schumer. Somebody conservatives should always quote.

    Wow. How very mature!!

I think that I’ll do an HTML export and take a screen-grab of this statement, where Oak is accusing one of the regular commenters on this site of “RAPING” his spouse, and then e-mail it to POLI (as well as a few other bloggers) to get their opinion on whether or not they think it is wise to allow someone with the immature mind of an 8 years old to create blogs of any sort.

BCL. You probably could put together an easy defamation case against both Oak and Poli if you so desired. I could easily track them both down via IP trails and subpoenas throught their ISP’s. Something to think about.

  12. Fred

Legal Eagle, have you stopped raping YOUR spouse?

  13. Legal Eagle

Ooh, a double ping on ISP’s. This is going to be fun. Just keep talking (please)
You really should stick with your main handle though. You’re going to look pretty silly when your exposed for posting under different handels. Not that you don’t ALREADY look silly now. Keep talking.

  14. MI Conservative

    Immaturity at its best.

I don’t know how to check IPs but I’m starting to wonder if Poli isn’t Oak Leaf in disguise.

I cannot believe an owner and manager of a site like this would hire a blogger like Oak Leaf.

On the other hand–Oak Leafs resonse is pretty good proof of the liberal he is. That’s the trash of Daily Kos and Huff Post.

Pretty vile stuff. Considering his political views and hateful personal attacks on commenters, why he continues to post on this once excellent blog is an enigma. Somebody please explain it to me.

That’s not the first time he used that line in bold over my post Legal Eagle. Look Here

    Oak,
This thread is already been astroturfed by the Paulistinians….

  20. MI Conservative

    Oak,

If you truly care about this site and conservative views do the correct thing and leave.

    acroso/sq/qs/invalid10,

Bush isn’t president anymore. Please get over your BDS ASAP.

  22. rightwingyahoo

Oak Leaf, lol, you are destroying what is left of poor Poli’s website. Congratulations.

  23. rightwingyahoo

Raping your spouse? Man, you are really gone. What a joke. Who says that?

  24. rightwingyahoo

    Hey Oak,

How is the GM (now known as Government Motors) bailout working out?

Nope, no money wasted here. I just can’t wait to see the next generation Corvette. I hear that it is going to have a Obama designed plug-in hybrid, biodiesel, ethanol/switch-grass engine that produces a walloping 25 hp and gets 75 mpg.

According to the police report, Elizabeth Cartwright said her husband “believed that the US Government was conspiring against him. She said he had been severely disturbed that Barack Obama had been elected President.”

    Joshua Cartwright shot two policeman.

Poplawski’s friends told the Associated Press that Poplawski “feared the Obama administration was poised to ban guns.” Joshua Cartwright shot two policeman.

On April 4, after Richard Poplawski killed three police officers.

Joshua Cartwright and Richard Poplawski are now both dead due to their misguided acts.

People die violently every day due to the actions of twisted individuals. The reasons for their despicable acts vary as do the tools employed.

As planned, our boy Fred salivates and laps up with relish every morsel of anti-gun propaganda spoon fed to him by the agenda-driven lamestream media.

Good boy Fred! I suppose you have a “Free Thinker and I Vote!” bumper sticker on your Prius.

  29. Fred

People die violently every day due to the actions of twisted individuals.

The difference is that the above violence is due to people that have been whipped into a frenzy by conservatives.

Why are you responding to my post, rather than to the poster who quoted a line following a movie shooting?
