Linda Foley, Rick Santorum And Jaywalking

Last night I linked to some great blog posts about the Linda Foley comments. Blue State Conservatives has more.

Speaking of stupid comments, I saw a clip of the Rick Santorum “Hitler” statement this morning on Fox and Friends. I agree with Betsy Newmark that statements like this debase the language and are disappointing. I think the statement referencing Hitler was incredibly stupid, but I really don’t know why so many liberal bloggers are all upset and screaming hypocrisy because every conservative blogger isn’t writing about it. I have listened to Democrats make the comparisons of Bush to Hitler for four years now and at some point it just stopped being shocking anymore. I would even go so far as to say it is no longer “news” when a politician compares anyone to Hitler. It should be, because it is a stupid thing to say, and it is not something a U.S. Congressman or Senator should be spouting. But think about it, if something happens on a daily basis, is it news anymore?

If the media had reported all the times Democrats pulled out the Bushitler line in the past four years they would have had no time left to report on really important things, like the Michael Jackson trial and the Runaway Bride. It is no longer news to report the Democrats’ Hitler references, but it is news when a Republican uses one. I guess that shows for which party the use of such language is out of character

I am disappointed that a Republican made the ridiculous comparison. This is the first I have heard of Rick Santorum using a Hitler comparison and he has apologized for it. Unless he continues to use it, I will accept the apology and assume he did so out of anger and frustration. For those Democrats who make the comparison on a daily basis, I can’t even guess why they do it, but ignorance of history is the first thing that comes to mind.

One more thought along those lines — I wonder if the constant comparison of Bush to Hitler has done more to hurt Bush or to help Hitler. My guess is that the latter is true. All those “Jaywalking” segments on The Tonight Show have convinced me that there are quite a few students in the public school system in America that are not receiving adequate instruction in history. For those getting more of their news from Jon Stewart than from Brit Hume, and who have heard for more than four years now that Bush = Hitler, I wonder how bad a guy they think Hitler could have been?
