First Impressions

By Lorie Byrd ~ October 3rd, 2005 @ 11:21 am

I have been out all morning and am just catching up on my reading about Harriet Miers. I only have a few thoughts on the Miers nomination so far. Since Bush knows her so well, I assume that he is comfortable with her conservative credentials. I do wish she were a bit younger, though. But I wish I were a bit younger too, so I really don’t want to hold that against her. I really hope that she will be able to handle the questioning by the Senate judiciary committee even half as well as Roberts did. From the brief statement I heard her give I did not get the impression that she is a terribly tough cookie, but I guess we will find out soon enough. Again, on that subject I am having to trust that the President knows her well enough to know that she is up to the task.

Gay Patriot has a take that I have not seen anywhere else — at least not yet. (Via Harry Callahan at Ace of Spades.)

Update: Much more at Confirm Them, including this rather colorful post by Quin Hillyer.

Update II: This information about Miers’ fight against the ABA on the issue of abortion should give pro-life conservatives some comfort. It makes me feel a little better about Miers being able to stand up to the Democrat bullies senators on the judiciary committee.

Update III: Michelle Malkin has an excellent round-up of opinion from around the blogosphere. So far, most first reactions are pretty negative, however Mary Katharine Ham’s round-up at Townhall includes a few positive reactions (at Update 4).

Update IV: Hugh Hewitt argues that President Bush picked Miers because of her White House experience witnessing firsthand the issues that have arisen during the prosecution of the War On Terror. He says that supporters should trust Bush’s judgment on this one.

Update V: The Anchoress predicted that Miers would be the pick and she has some really interesting thoughts about some reasons she may have been chosen. She also has some words for fellow conservatives who are freaking out over the nomination. I agree on this one. Until much more is known, just calm down and chill out. I know that many are upset that someone who has not been a judge was chosen for the position over many brilliant conservative judges with incredible credentials. Some are understandably upset that she could have given money to Al Gore in 1988. That one bothers me too, but I remember 1988 and Al Gore was probably the most conservative Democrat in that race. (It is a little hard to remember now in light of the past 12 years, but he didn’t lose his mind until he became VP. Back in 1988 was around the time that Tipper was being painted as the church lady for taking on the music industry over explicit lyrics.) Many conservatives in Texas at that time were still registered Democrats. I am just saying to give her a chance. After more is known, many conservatives may still believe that Miers was a bad choice, but at least then they will be basing that opinion on something they know, rather than something they fear.
