Popularity Polls – Phooey
To read Steve Holland’s Reuters news story Sunday with its inane headline “Bush Battling to climb out of a popularity slump” leaves the reader with the impression that the sole purpose of the administration is to be popular. What a “high school” mentality. With the war on terror, Iraq, hurricanes, and energy costs being the immediate issues, the Bush administration has the responsibility to carry out its overall agenda – taxes, social security, and the economy as well. Being President is not a popularity contest.
We can say that the negative poll numbers were not a product of the administration, but a product of a continuous negative slant on every major issue by the news media. Unfortunately, the public’s immediate reaction to negative news is to answer that things aren’t going well, and this reflects in the poll numbers. But the Bush administration is continuing its course. Accomplishments- a new conservative Chief Justice, Iraq heading towards a constitution referendum on October 15, an economy capable of weathering catastrophes and energy cost increases. And yet the news media doesn’t recognize these accomplishments. The job is difficult and made more complex by recent events, but the Bush administration is showing it is capable of meeting the challenges.
